Prem Rakshit choreographed the Naatu Naatu song from RRR
Bosco Martis expressed his displeasure upon Naatu Naatu choreographer not getting the apt spotlight after the Oscars win.
Choreographers Remo D’Souza, Kruti Mahesh, Bosco Martis, Vijay Ganguly, Ganesh Acharya, and dancer Shakti Mohan recently gathered for a choreographers conference on the YouTube channel Nritya Shakti. The discussion revolved around the recognition that choreographers often do not receive the credit they deserve in the entertainment industry. Bosco Martis shared a poignant example highlighting this issue, pointing out the lack of acknowledgment for RRR choreographer Prem Rakshit despite the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ winning an Oscar.
During the conversation, Bosco emphasized the importance of ensuring that all members of a film’s team receive due credit when they achieve prestigious platforms like the Oscars. He expressed surprise that although ‘Naatu Naatu’ was celebrated at the Oscars, the choreographer behind its iconic steps was largely overlooked.
He expressed, “I was shocked…Naatu Naatu, the song was celebrated at the Oscars. So, I was like why was the choreographer not celebrated? That song was performed at the Oscars, they performed those steps that he created. When you get that platform, you make sure that you are visible, that you are celebrated because you have put in a lot of effort and hard work, and not only India, but the world danced to that song.”
Remo D’Souza echoed these sentiments, highlighting the lack of acknowledgment from actors, directors, and music composers for Prem Rakshit’s contribution to the acclaimed song, “And no actor, no director, no music composer nobody mentioned his name,” he stated.
‘Naatu Naatu’ captured global attention even before the release of RRR, becoming a viral sensation that transcended borders. The iconic dance steps caught the attention of diverse personalities, from the South Korean Embassy in Delhi to Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan, who showcased their dance moves at exclusive events.
Upon winning an Oscar for Best Original Song, ‘Naatu Naatu’ from SS Rajamouli’s film ‘RRR,’ composer MM Keeravaani and lyricist Chandrabose were called on stage to receive the prestigious award. Unfortunately, Chandrabose did not have the opportunity to address the audience, while Keeravaani used the platform to express his admiration for The Carpenters and performed a reimagined rendition of their song “On Top Of The World.”
Prem Rakshit had previously expressed his gratitude for the love and support received for RRR and ‘Naatu Naatu,’ underscoring the profound impact of being recognized for his creative endeavors on such esteemed platforms like the Oscars, “When MM Keeravaani Sir and Chandrabose Sir came out after winning the Oscar, Keeravaani sir hugged me, I can’t express how blessed I felt at that moment. I want to thank everyone for loving RRR and Naatu Naatu so much,” he told ANI.
