Mizoram Home Minister Lalchmalliana on Saturday said the recent border conflict with Assam was not related to drug trafficking or animal trade and denied involvement of “non-state actors” in the matter.
He said the conflict was an “inevitable retribution” to protect the territorial integrity and ancestral lands of the Mizos, which had been threatened several times over the decades by “invasions and encroachments from Assam”.
“Drug trafficking and animal trade have nothing to do with the border conflict, and non-state actors were not involved in the incident. How a responsible government can join hands with non-state actors or influence ?” The home minister said.
Assam CM meets Governor, discusses border Issue
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday met Governor Jagdish Mukhi and discussed various issues including the border situation between the state and Mizoram and the functioning of state universities.
FIR Officer summoned against CM Sarma
The Assam chief minister has also questioned the appropriateness of the Mizoram government to file an FIR against him and six state officials over the recent border clashes when the location of the incident is within the “constitutional territory” of his state.
Criminal cases have been registered against Sarma, four senior state police officers and two more officials in connection with the violent clashes that took place on the outskirts of Wairangte town in Mizoram’s Kolasib district.
They have been booked under various charges including attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. Apart from this, cases were also registered against 200 unidentified Assam Police personnel.
Four police officers and two administrative officers have been summoned for questioning on Sunday. The Assam Police has also summoned six government officials from Mizoram to appear before the Dholai police station on Monday, officials said.
However, the chief minister said on Saturday that he was ready to join any investigation on the issue.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is holding regular talks with the Assam and Mizoram administrations on the situation amid the ongoing border dispute between the two northeastern states.
Acknowledging that the situation was tense but under control, Home Ministry officials said that the CRPF battalion patrolling the area along NH-306 between the two states was trying to prevent any clash between the state’s policies. Working with full force.

Nagaland Chief Secretary J Alam and his Assam counterpart Jishnu Barua held a meeting in Dimapur in Nagaland where both the states agreed to withdraw their respective police forces from the border places to their base camps within 24 hours.
The agreement was signed by the two chief secretaries in the presence of Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton and Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.

“Nagaland and Assam will monitor the area by surveillance using UAVs and satellite imagery with a view to maintain the status quo. The Superintendents of Police of Mokokchung (Nagaland) and Jorhat (Assam) districts will ensure the orderly withdrawal of their respective forces and will be responsible for the same in an urgent matter,” the meeting’s minutes said.
Northeast India will always be one
Meanwhile, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has said that Northeast India will always remain one amidst the deadly violence witnessed along his state’s border with Assam.
Zoramthanga also shared Twitter A notification issued by his government, which states that there will be no restriction on the movement of non-residents of Mizoram in Kolasib district bordering Assam’s Cachar district.

The Chief Minister tweeted, “#Northeast India will always be #One.”
Police posts being built on the borders
Amid such tension, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Kirti Jalli said that the police are setting up checkpoints at the border places to protect the area, highlighting that the safety of the people is of utmost importance. The Deputy Commissioner said that the Mizoram Police crossed the border and entered the forest area and set up camps there.
