Border Dispute: Protests Continue in Bengaluru, Other Areas Despite ‘Peace Talks’ Between Karnataka, Maharashtra CMs

Protests in Karnataka continued on Thursday, despite a telephone call between the Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Maharashtra about maintaining cordial relations between the people of the two states.

Amid the raging Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute, the pro-Kannada faction, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) continued their protest across Karnataka on Thursday.

Kannada activists protest at Mysore Bank in Bengaluru. He gave a deadline of 2 days to the state government to act against pro-Maharashtra organizations vandalizing state buses, failing which Kannada activists said they would take the protest to the next level and block buses coming from Maharashtra. But will continue to pelt stones.

“Ministers from Maharashtra should not be allowed to enter Karnataka. MES should be banned immediately; I make this request on behalf of Kannadigas. They are humiliating Kannadigas by putting black ink on Karnataka buses, they will see the result here. We will not allow any bus from Maharashtra to enter Karnataka, it is our duty to teach them a lesson, we will do so”, said Kannada activist Sa Ra Govindu.

In Gadag district, members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike allegedly attacked a goods vehicle with Maharashtra registration number. The protesters sprayed black paint on the goods train and wrote ‘Kannada’ on it. Some protesters also climbed onto vehicles and raised slogans against the Karnataka government for not resolving the border issue.

Pro-Kannada organizations also staged protests in Davangere and Bagalkot districts. In Davangere, Kannada activists staged a protest in front of the Davanagere Municipal Corporation by burning an effigy of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde.

Meanwhile, Kannada workers in Chamarajanagar district threw tomatoes at the photographs of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. Even as protests over the border issue continue in Karnataka, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday reiterated that the Mahajan Commission report is the final word and all necessary action has been taken for the safety of the people.

“All of us have taken all necessary action for the safety of the people of the state and the place. We have spoken to the DGP and the Chief Secretary. I have spoken to Nadda and told him about Karnataka’s stand. The CM of Maharashtra had called and asked to maintain peace between the two sides. I have asked him to keep calm by my side and I will keep mine. I have said that they have to see that no one instigates us from that side”, said CM Basavaraj Bommai.

Even though the Maharashtra-Karnataka border matter is in the Supreme Court, protests are continuing in both the BJP-ruled states.
