Hours after polling for the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, attackers threw bombs at a BJP worker’s house and outside a Trinamool Congress office in Barrackpore city.
As reported by India Today TV the two incidents of post-poll violence on Saturday night aimed to terrorize local residents. The bombings immediately caused panic in the areas.
The BJP and Trinamool Congress have blamed each other for the bombings, which were captured on CCTV. However, no injuries or casualties were immediately reported.
Sporadic violence in some parts of West Bengal disrupted the voting process during the final phase of the general elections on Saturday. In Sandeshkhali, Trinamool and BJP workers clashed over allegations of electoral malpractices.
BJP candidate and Sandeshkhali sexual assault survivor Rekha Patra alleged that Trinamool workers prevented voters from casting their votes. In response, the state’s ruling party accused Patra and the BJP of attempting to disrupt the polling process.
As clashes erupted between the groups on the Basanti Express highway, police used batons and tear gas to disperse the mob.
Workers from the BJP and Trinamool Congress also clashed in parts of Jadavpur and Diamond Harbour constituencies.
In South 24 Parganas, a mob, allegedly threatened by Trinamool Congress supporters, threw Electronic Voting Machines into a pond in agitation.
The Election Commission received 2,667 complaints about EVM malfunctions and obstruction of agents entering booths in West Bengal during voting in the Lok Sabha seats of Basirhat, Mathurapur, Jaynagar, Diamond Harbour, Barasat, Jadavpur, Dum Dum, Kolkata Dakshin, and Kolkata Uttar on Saturday.
According to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, at least 24 people were injured in the violence.
