Bombardments escalate as military factions battle in Sudan’s capital

Airstrikes and artillery fire intensified in Sudan’s capital early Tuesday, residents said, as the army tried to disperse the paramilitary rivals fighting for more than a month.

Witnesses said the sounds of airstrikes and clashes and explosions could be heard south of Khartoum, and parts of the surrounding towns of Bahri and Omdurman were heavily shelled throughout the night.

Fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) has caused unrest in other parts of the country, particularly in the western region of Darfur, but is centered in Khartoum.

It has forced nearly 200,000 people to flee to neighboring countries and displaced more than 700,000 inside Sudan, creating a humanitarian crisis that threatens to destabilize the region.
