The brother-in-law of a block development committee member was murdered in Bahraich after he resisted an alleged attempt to kidnap his relative by the BJP candidate’s husband and supporters ahead of the block panchayat chief election. In another incident in Lakhimpur Kheri, a Samajwadi Party candidate was allegedly assaulted by BJP workers, following which the administration suspended six policemen, ordering a magisterial inquiry.
The Congress accused the state government of apologizing, alleging that a sari of a female BDC member was also pulled in front of police officials. The Bahraich incident took place in Dinapurwa village on Thursday night when Sudhir Yagyasaini, husband of BJP candidate Sarita Yagyasaini, along with his supporters and a gunner reached the house of Block Development Committee (BDC) member Yadurai Devi. Local residents alleged that they tried to kidnap her to get votes in the July 10 polling. BDC members are eligible to vote in the election. When Yadurai Devi’s brother-in-law Mayaram (60) resisted the attempt, he was hit with the butt of a gun and died on the spot, police said. Superintendent of Police Sujata Singh said that an FIR has been registered against 10 people, including Sudhir Yagyasaini and the gunner, who were posted under the protection of his wife Sarita.
He said that the police have arrested two accused- Ram Bhulvan Shukla and Jitendra Kumar and teams have been formed to arrest others involved in the act. The SP said that action would be taken against the accused under the stringent National Security Act.
Samajwadi Party district president Ramharsh Yadav alleged that the police was acting as an “agent” of the BJP, due to which its members were committing such acts. Meanwhile, in Sirathu block of Kaushambi, police raided the residence of an independent candidate in which 18 BDC members were present. He was taken to the Saini police station and later released after the intervention of BJP MLA Sheetla Prasad Patel. Circle Officer Yogendra Krishna Narayan said that he has received information that independent candidate Dilip Patel has taken 18 BDC members hostage in his house.
Acting on this, the police reached there and brought all the 18 members to the police station, where the BDC members said that they had gone there voluntarily and were not compelled. In Lakhimpur Kheri, Samajwadi Party district president Ram Pal Yadav and others alleged that his party’s candidate and his proposer were assaulted by leaders and workers of the ruling party. After he claimed that he was not allowed to submit his nomination papers, video clips of the incident have surfaced on social media. Later, on the complaint of the Samajwadi Party candidate, an FIR was registered against some people in the Pasgavan police, out of which two have been named in the complaint.
Police said one accused Yash Verma has been arrested while police teams have been formed to nab the others.
Lakhimpur Kheri DM Arvind Kumar Chaurasia has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the entire matter. Six policemen, including Mohammadi Circle Officer Abhay Pratap Malla, Pasagwan police station in-charge Adarsh Kumar Singh, an inspector and three sub-inspectors, have been suspended with immediate effect on charges of negligence in duty. Meanwhile, in Lucknow, State Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu expressed shock over the incident in Lakhimpur, alleging that a woman BDC member’s sari was pulled in front of police officers. Demanding an apology from the state government, he said that even women ministers did not consider it appropriate to condemn the incident. Seeking to start the election process afresh for the block, Lallu said that the government has crossed all limits of dictatorship.
