BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi says ‘not a farmer, but a goon’ Tikait calls remark an ‘insult’ of 80 crore food grains

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meenakshi Lekhi on Thursday blew up all guns blazing against the farmers’ “peasant parliament” after a media person was allegedly attacked during a protest. Condemning the incident, the firebrand leader, who is also the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, said that “they are not farmers, they are goons”.

“They are not farmers, they are goons… These are criminal acts. What happened on January 26 was also shameful criminal activities. The opposition encouraged such activities,” Lekhi told a press conference on Thursday.

This triggered a quick response from Bharatiya Kisan Sangh leader Rakesh Tikait, who called it an “insult” to the 80 crore Annadata.

Taking objection to Lekhi’s statement, Tikait said he should be ashamed of himself and stop eating the grains grown by him.

Goons are those who have nothing. It is wrong for farmers to make such remarks. We are farmers, not goons. Farmers are the ‘annadata’ of the land. Such remarks are an insult to India’s 80 crore farmers. Meenakshi Lekhi ji should stop eating the grains grown by us. They should be ashamed of themselves. We have passed a resolution in the ‘Kisan’ Parliament condemning his statement,” Tikait said.

A group of 200 farmers protesting the Centre’s three agriculture laws started the ‘Kisan Sansad’ on Thursday at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi, a few meters from Parliament, where the monsoon session is underway.
