The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not mention pending criminal cases in her nomination papers for the Bhawanipur bypoll. The saffron party has also filed a complaint with the Election Commission against the TMC chief.

While BJP has fielded lawyer by profession Priyanka Tibrewal, CPI(M) has fielded lawyer Shreejib Biswas from this seat. Congress has refrained from participating in the by-elections. Voting in Bhabnipur will be held on 30 September and the results will be declared on 3 October.

Earlier on Friday, Banerjee filed her nomination to win the bypoll, which is an absolute requirement to continue as chief minister.

Banerjee, who hails from Bhabnipur, won the seat twice, in 2011 and 2016, but shifted to Nandigram, where the agricultural land acquisition movement against the Left Front government had transformed her into a major political force in the unstable state, so that He can challenge his ex. Aashrit and now BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is on his home turf. Although Banerjee led the TMC to a resounding victory for the third consecutive term, it lost in Nandigram. He will now have to win Bhabnipur to ensure an unbroken tenure as Chief Minister.

To continue as chief minister, Banerjee will have to win a seat in the state assembly by November 5 as per the constitutional provisions. The constitution allows a non-member of a state legislature or parliament to remain in ministerial office without being elected for only six months.

After his defeat in Nandigram, state cabinet minister and TMC MLA from Bhabnipur Sovandev Chattopadhyay vacated the seat to facilitate his return to the assembly from there.

Banerjee was first elected to the assembly in a by-election from Bhawanipore in 2011, months after the TMC came to power after ousting the 34-year-old Left Front government. He represented the South Kolkata Lok Sabha seat, of which Bhabnipur is a segment, six times.
