BJP’s firefighter Dharmendra Pradhan involved to woo UP Brahmins ahead of elections; Plan to remove anti-Brahmin story

Dharmendra Pradhan, a prominent OBC leader from Odisha, was named by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).naarazThe (unhappy) Brahmin community in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the crucial 2022 state assembly elections.

The senior leader, who is also the BJP’s UP in-charge, is playing the role of a firefighter as the saffron unit tries to woo the community. Sources said that Pradhan has been tasked to address the issue especially because of his acumen to deal with such difficult situations and his stature at the national level.

Sources said Pradhan, who is also the Union Education Minister, personally contacted prominent Brahmin BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh and listened to their grievances for early resolution of any issues.

This led to the formation of a four-member committee with Rajya Sabha Chief Whip Shiv Pratap Shukla, former National Secretary Abhijit Mishra, MP Mahesh Sharma and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Bhai Mokaria.

While sources said that citing instances of injustice to the community, the leaders were told to find a way forward and not let the opposition take advantage of the narrative that is being created against the BJP in a particular community.

The party has also asked its Brahmin leaders to take on the opposition parties who are projecting the party as anti-Brahmin.

Realizing that Brahmins constitute 15 to 17 per cent of UP’s population and most of them voted for the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the party does not want to lose its loyal vote bank.

According to senior Brahmin leaders of the party, the BJP was successful in securing 312 seats in the last assembly elections due to the full support of the Brahmin community.

Also, senior leaders who understand the dynamics of castes in the state believe that Brahmins still guide and influence many communities and thus it is of utmost importance to bring them into the party’s favor.
