Later elections will also be held for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Chandigarh Bharatiya Janata Party’s Anoop Gupta on Tuesday won the Chandigarh Mayor’s election by just one vote defeating Aam Aadmi Party’s Jasbir Singh.

According to officials, Gupta secured 15 votes, while the AAP candidate got 14 votes. A close fight was expected between the BJP and the AAP after the six-member Congress and the lone Shiromani Akali Dal decided to abstain from voting. ,

Both the BJP and the AAP have 14 councilors each in the House, while the MP from Chandigarh, currently BJP’s Kirron Kher, also has the vote to be an ex-officio member of the Municipal Corporation House. Kher also cast his vote in the poll.

Anoop Gupta was the first deputy mayor. Gupta was elected councilor for the first time in 2021. I will run the house with the same dignity, the way our previous mayor (BJP’s Sarabjit Kaur) ran it.

Later, elections will also be held for the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
