National People’s Party President Sangma met Meghalaya Governor Fagu Chauhan on Friday and handed over the letter of support of 32 MLAs staking claim to form the government in the northeastern state.

The Congress on Monday hit out at the BJP for supporting the NPP chief Conrad Sangma-led government in Meghalaya, saying a few days back his government was considered “most corrupt” by the BJP top leadership and now “such a situation” has arisen. In “Amnesia”, the party is shaking hands with them.

The opposition party also alleged that the ‘BJP washing machine’ is now running at full speed.

National People’s Party President Sangma met Meghalaya Governor Fagu Chauhan on Friday and handed over the letter of support of 32 MLAs staking claim to form the government in the northeastern state.

Outgoing Chief Minister Sangma said he has the support of BJP, Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and two independent MLAs, while the number may increase in the coming days as he is in touch with other parties as well.

“A few days ago the government of Konrad Sangma in Meghalaya was the most corrupt in the country according to both PM and HM. Now of course, I feel BJP is joining hands with him in amnesia. Meghalaya deserves better,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet.

“I should have added that BJP

Now running at full speed,” Ramesh said in another tweet.

Ramesh also shared two videos – one featuring the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and another Home Minister Amit Shah – in which he is critical of the Sangma-led Meghalaya government.

The NPP emerged as the single largest party in the state on Thursday, winning 26 seats out of 59 constituencies that went to polls on February 27.

As the party fell short of the magic figure of 31 in the 60-member assembly, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Sangma sought Shah’s support in forming a new government.

The United Democratic Party (UDP), which was an ally of the NPP in the Sangma government, emerged as the second largest party by winning 11 constituencies. It had won only six seats in the 2018 elections.

The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won five seats each, while the BJP won two assembly constituencies.
