Former Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Raipur in Chhattisgarh Ramesh Bais was on Tuesday appointed as the new Governor of Jharkhand. He was currently holding the same post in Tripura. Bais from the appointed governor of Tripura in 2019 after the Modi-led BJP formed the government at the Center for the second time. According to News18 Chhattisgarh, the leader had returned from Raipur a few days ago. Sources said that he was informed about the reshuffle by the President himself during this visit.
Interestingly, none of the sitting MPs from Chhattisgarh were offered tickets during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, including five-time MP Bais.
He had been winning from Raipur parliamentary constituency continuously since 1996, but was replaced by Sunil Soni. His supporters were outraged. However, Bais himself was seen seeking votes for the BJP candidate, after which he was made the governor of Tripura when the Modi government returned to power after the election.
Born on 2 August 1948 in Raipur, then undivided Madhya Pradesh, Bais did his B.Sc from Bhopal. He is a farmer by profession.
He was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1989 and was re-elected to the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha from 1996 onwards. He also served as the Union Minister of State in the second and third regimes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, holding various portfolios such as Steel, Mines, Chemicals and Fertilizers, Information and Broadcasting, and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Mines and . Environment and Forests as of May 2004.
On 20 July 2019, he was appointed as the 18th Governor of Tripura, succeeding Kaptan Singh Solanki, a senior leader from Madhya Pradesh. He has been a powerful OBC leader of BJP in Chhattisgarh.
