Sources said MGP will wait for the final results and then decide whether to join the BJP or the Congress.

With exit polls predicting a hung Assembly in Goa when the assembly election results are announced on Thursday, the Maharashtrawadi Congress Party (MGP) is projected to emerge as one of the factions that could turn the tables for either the Congress or the BJP. and help form the government. coastal state.

MGP has been an ally of both the BJP and the Congress in the past. In 2017, when Manohar Parrikar was the chief minister, the party forged an alliance with the BJP. But later, when Dr Pramod Sawant became CM, two out of three MGP MLAs formally joined the BJP. The only other MLA was Sudin Dhavalikar – the party supremo who felt “betrayed”.

Dhavalikar is hoping to play the role of the kingmaker once in a while. “But this time, he is more than a kingmaker,” says a close aide of his on condition of anonymity.

MGP has a pre-poll alliance with TMC in this election.

MGP sources told CNN-New18 that they will wait for the final results and then decide whether to join the BJP or the Congress.

Sources said Dhavalikar, who enjoys good rapport with Union minister and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, would never support the BJP if Sawant is made the CM face of the alliance.

Dhavalikar is also not ruling out an alliance with the Congress in case he gets less than 14 seats. Then the party supremo wants nothing less than the post of CM (since he is the senior most in the house). This is a proposal that is already being discussed within Congress. “It may be a possibility, but the high command will make the final decision,” a congressional official told CNN-News18.
