BJP minister reacts by saying Tagore is being discriminated against by family because of ‘dark-skin’

The Union Minister of State for Education, Subhash Sarkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made some bizarre claims on Thursday. He said Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was discriminated against by his mother and family for having “dark skin”. He also said that Tagore’s family members “did not take him in their arms or make him sit on their lap”.

The minister made these remarks during a visit to the Visva Bharati University established by Tagore at Shantiniketan in West Bengal’s Bolpur district. Sarkar said, “The family members of Rabindranath Tagore were of fair complexion, but Tagore was not so fair in complexion. Because of this, his mother and other family members did not take him in their arms nor did he carry him in their arms. seated.” ANI.

The Union minister did not stop here, he said, “There are two types of fair complexions. One was bright yellow in color and the other was red. Tagore was fair but of another kind and was therefore embraced by his family. Less frequently than other fair kids,” as quoted by NDTV. Subhash Sarkar is a Member of Parliament (MP) in the lower house from Bankura district of West Bengal.

The statement has also received reactions from lovers of Rabindranath Tagore and students of Visva Bharati University.

The BJP, however, said the minister’s statements were taken out of context.
