Around 16 ’eminent’ personalities joined the BJP in Delhi on Tuesday with Union minister and Punjab election in-charge Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and state in-charge Dushyant Kumar Gautam welcoming the new members to the party.
BJP leaders said ever since PM Narendra Modi repealed three agriculture laws, they are seeing a rise in the party’s membership.
With phones ringing and requests pouring in every hour, party leaders say they verify credentials and check past performance of candidates before approving their membership.
“These requests are sent to the state for verification and approval. Then, it is sent to the central leadership. And not everyone is invited to the fold,” national general secretary and BJP state in-charge Dushyant Kumar Gautam said while picking up the call of anyone wanting to join the party. The BJP is certainly excited about the membership.
“We are accepting those who want to join (BJP), without doing anything to them. However, there will be many people who will be used according to their influence and ability to win,” said a senior party leader involved in the process.
Congress MLA from Qadian Fateh Singh Bajwa and younger brother of Congress MP Pratap Singh Bajwa and MLA Balwinder Singh Laddi and former cricketer Dinesh Mongia joined BJP today.
Shekhawat told News18 that BJP does not allow new members without checking their credentials.
On the exodus of BJP leaders in West Bengal during the recent by-elections, Shekhawat said, “We in the party think deeply on such issues. But if we look at Bengal, how many MLAs have left us? Although we have lost even a single person.” Don’t like to leave, but a handful leaves us under pressure no matter what. It can’t be considered a failure. We welcome those who want to come into our family.”
He also said that the Congress is in panic as the BJP has strengthened its hold in Punjab. “Satnam Singh Bajwa’s family is famous for fighting terrorists in Punjab. I am happy that his son and Congress MLA from Kadian (Fateh Singh) has joined BJP. He was hurt by the internal squabble in the party.”
People within the BJP say they expect the Congress and the Akalis to join the party in the coming days.
“Relevant, useful or not, the candidature will be assessed later,” said a senior BJP leader.
