‘BJP could have focused MORE on MCD election if..’: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on AAP win in civic polls

Guwahati: As the BJP’s 15-year rule in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ended with Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP contesting the civic polls, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed that his party could have focused more on the contest, if This does not coincide with the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections 2022. The firebrand Assam BJP leader also said that the BJP will do well in Gujarat, where the counting of votes will take place on Thursday. However, the Assam Chief Minister did not comment on the party’s prospects in Himachal Pradesh.

Sarma’s comments came after the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 out of 250 wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, ending the BJP’s 15-year tenure in the civic body. The BJP managed to end up with 104 wards in its kitty.

The Congress won nine wards and three independents. “We were being given 60-70 seats (exit poll predictions) in Delhi, but we have done much better,” Sarma said on the sidelines of an event. “Had the elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh not been held simultaneously, we could have focused more on Delhi,” he said, indicating that the results could have gone in favor of the BJP.

Sarma had campaigned for his party in both Gujarat and Delhi. The BJP leader further said, ‘Very good results are expected from Gujarat tomorrow.’

The Chief Minister of Assam also said that the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is increasing continuously. “Many elections are held within a period of five years. One thing we can understand is that Modiji’s popularity is increasing with time.

AAP ended 15 years of BJP rule in MCD

The high-stakes battle for control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has come to an end, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) winning 134 of the total 250 wards in the national capital’s civic body polls, overthrowing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 15-year rule. Is. BJP). As the Delhi State Election Commission announced the final results today, AAP won 134 wards, while BJP came second with 104 wards. The Congress won nine wards, while independents won three.

AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Thanks to the people of Delhi and many congratulations to all for this resounding victory. Now we all have to work together to make Delhi clean and beautiful.”

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Twitter, “Today honesty and work defeated the world’s biggest party which was ruling MCD for 15 years. The people of Delhi have given us a big responsibility to make Delhi clean and beautiful. Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership. Let us all work together to make Delhi the best city in the country.”

Heartfelt gratitude to the people of Delhi for trusting Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi MCD. By defeating the world’s biggest and most negative party, the people of Delhi have given victory to an honest and hardworking Arvind Kejriwal. For us this is not just a victory, it is a big responsibility, Sisodia said.

Celebrations had begun at the Aam Aadmi Party office in the national capital before the final results were announced after trends showed the party is all set to take the MCD from the BJP. Party workers gathered in front of the office and cheered, danced and raised slogans praising party chief Arvind Kejriwal.

In a fiercely fought battle, the BJP started the day by initially leading for about one and a half hours in the early trends, however, the trends began to change as AAP took the lead and held it till the final results were declared. Both the parties expected the counting of votes to begin at 8 am, with the BJP claiming to win the election for the fourth time, while the AAP expressed confidence of winning the election.

The high-decibel battle that was fought in the election campaign ahead of the polling on December 4, witnessed claims and claims by both the parties (BJP, AAP) to win the election, however, it all boiled down to December 7 when the election Result has been published.

Polling for 250 wards in the national capital was held on December 4, with a voter turnout of around 50 per cent and a total of 1,349 candidates in the fray. However, the low voting turnout did not prove to be an indicator of pro-incumbency. The Congress, which is mostly focused on the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, was not predicted (in exit polls) to pose a major challenger in the recent polls.

However, the high-stakes civic polls were largely seen as a three-way contest between the BJP, AAP and the Congress. Delhi witnessed an intense campaigning by the AAP and the BJP, with top leaders including Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states and MPs campaigning door-to-door and holding meetings to garner public support.

This was the first civic poll after the fresh delimitation exercise. From 2012-2022 Delhi had 272 wards and three corporations in Delhi – NDMC, SDMC and EDMC which were later amalgamated into one MCD which formally came into existence on 22 May.
