BJP announces star campaigners for Bengal bypolls: Hemant, Smriti also in list full of local flavor

The Bharatiya Janata Party has put the names of 20 star campaigners to campaign for the party in the upcoming by-elections in Bengal. One of the seats is Dinhata, which was vacated by Nisith Pramanik to continue as MP from Cooch Behar, and he is now Minister of State for Home. Bypolls to three other seats, Shantipur (Nadiya), Kharda (North 24 Parganas) and Gosaba (South 24 Parganas) will also be held on October 30 while counting of votes will take place on November 2.

In the list of BJP star campaigners generally laden with big names from across the country, this time the focus has been more on the local leadership. The party’s Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar is at number one in the list. His predecessor Dilip Ghosh and BJP’s Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari are also there.

Nisith Pramanik will also campaign for the by-election. Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, who is a fluent Bengali speaker, is also on the list, and so is Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh, who is known for delivering inflammatory speeches.

Some interesting names among the star campaigners are Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik who hails from Tripura and is a very fluent Bengali speaker, as well as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose state borders Bengal. Sources say that Himanta can be expected to spread his magic in Bengal in the same way as he has delivered goods for the party in Assam and rest of the Northeast.

The recently announced national executive list of the BJP includes several leaders from Bengal, such as Mithun Chakraborty, Dinesh Trivedi and Roopa Ganguly. Analysts say that four state ministers, including Nisith Pramanik, Shantanu Thakur, John Barla and Subhash Sarkar, along with others, are on the list, whether the BJP is trying to signal to its workers and the people of West Bengal.
