BJP, AGP will fight municipal elections together, says Kalita. Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: Assam BJP President Bhabesho Kalita, after taking stock of the organizational strength in several minority-dominated lower Assam districts on Saturday, said agp And the BJP would fight the upcoming municipal elections together, but left it to the district committees of both the parties to resolve the conflict for seats.
“Our alliance with the AGP for the upcoming municipal elections will be at the local level and not at the state level,” Kalita said. After visiting Barpeta, Bajli and Bongaigaon districts on Saturday, he said the BJP-led alliance would win in all the civic bodies. He wished that the BJP allies would remain united from the root level without giving room to dissent, to keep the Congress and its allies at bay.
Kalita said the BJP would run smoothly in the civic polls and would perform better in the state than in the 2015 urban polls, which had set an example for the BJP’s resounding victory in the 2016 assembly elections. “It has been easiest for the BJP to win the municipal elections. We had captured 90% of the municipal bodies before forming the government in Assam. Now we have a government and a large number of MLAs. It will be a big victory for the BJP,” Kalita said.
Even as BJP sources told TOI that the AGP wants to field candidates on 50% of the seats in the municipal bodies falling in the constituencies represented by its (AGP) MLAs, Kalita mentioned the share Without saying that there will be some seats. They left for the AGP in those areas without any skirmishes. In constituencies where the BJP has MLAs, Kalita said the BJP will retain most of the seats.
The source had earlier said that apart from “pressuring” the BJP for 50% seats in municipalities where the AGP has MLAs, in many other areas, the regional party wants 30% seats. “The main reason behind forwarding the decision to the district committees is the inability of the BJP state leadership to convince its voters who want to fight alone in almost all the municipal bodies. But we want to keep our allies satisfied.”
The AGP has stepped up its activities in urban areas, where polling is to be held by the end of March. AGP spokesperson Manoj Saikia said that the regional party wants seat adjustment in all the constituencies. “Since we have to give some seats to the BJP in the constituencies where we have MLAs, the AGP is also eyeing a fixed number of seats in all the municipal bodies across the state. After all, the party’s strength in municipalities and panchayats will be crucial in the next Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
The AGP has already constituted a state-level committee for urban elections headed by senior leader Phani Bhushan Chowdhury, where West Guwahati has its MLAs. Ramendra Narayan Kalita is the coordinator.
In Greater Guwahati, West Guwahati is the only seat where the AGP has an MLA. AGP is likely to claim the maximum number of seats under West Guwahati in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections.
