Arrested. All eight people, including two children, were burnt to death after petrol bombs set a dozen houses on fire in Bogtui village early on Tuesday.

Eleven people were arrested on the same day for their involvement in the incident.

A senior police officer told news agency PTI that forensic experts were probing the damaged houses to get an idea about the “nature of the accident”. The West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional Director General (CID) Gyanwant Singh to probe the incident.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a detailed report on the incident from the state government.

Earlier in the day, the Calcutta High Court directed the CFSL Delhi to immediately collect the necessary material for forensic investigation at Bogtui village in Bengal’s Birbhum district, where at least eight people died in a suspicious outcome of the murder of a TMC panchayat officer. It was done The court asked the state government to file a report in the matter before it by 2 pm on Thursday, when the matter would be taken up for hearing again.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava, taking suo motu cognizance and hearing the PILs, ordered that CCTVs should be installed at the crime scene in the presence of District Judge Purva Bardhaman and recording should be done till further orders. A bench of Justice R Bhardwaj directed a team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi to visit the spot and collect samples for examination without delay.

It asked the DGP, in consultation with District Judge Purba Bardhaman, to ensure the safety of witnesses, including a minor boy, who was injured in the arson. The court said that the petition has been filed after taking suo motu cognizance for a fair investigation in the matter.

In the PILs, the petitioners have prayed for investigation by the CBI or any other agency which is not controlled by the State. The Advocate General, representing the government, opposed the prayer saying that a SIT was probing the matter and there was no need to transfer the matter to any other agency.
