Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has warned that humanity could “enter the worst of the pandemic” as the Omicron variant spreads rapidly around the world, emphasizing that Omicron “will strike home for all of us”. In a series of tweets, Gates said that he has canceled most of his vacation plans as his close friends are increasingly infected with the COVID-19 virus.
“When it looked like life would return to normal, we may have entered the worst part of the pandemic. For all of us Omicron will be knocking at home. My close friends have it now, and I’ve canceled most of my vacation plans,” Gates tweeted late Tuesday World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has already said that “a canceled event is better than a life cancelled,” in the wake of the Omicron spread.
In the US, Omicron is now dominant, accounting for 73 percent of new infections. “Omicron is spreading faster than any virus in history. It will soon be in every country in the world,” Gates said. “The big unknown is how sick Omicron makes you. We need to take this seriously until we know more about it. Even if it’s only half as severe as Delta, this will be the worst surge ever because it’s so contagious,” he posted.
