PATNA: The Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) on Friday unearthed assets worth over Rs 3.7 crore from Mrityunjay Kumar, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of state Mines and Geology Department Minister Janak Ram’s known sources of income.
SVU raided their premises in Patna, Araria and Katihar found 30 gold biscuits worth around Rs 26.7 lakh, Rs 33 lakh in cash, jewelery worth about Rs 45 lakh, Rs 25 lakh in bank accounts, immovables worth several crores property included. 3,000 sq ft of land behind Loyla School in the posh Patliputra Colony Patna And huge investments in life insurance and other plans.
Sources in SVU said the market value of their Patliputra plot has been pegged at at least Rs 2 crore, but its deed value has been shown to be only Rs 32 lakh.
Raids were also conducted against Mrityunjay’s alleged girlfriend Ratna Chatterjee, who was sacked from service as Child Development Project Officer in 2011 after she was arrested while taking bribe. Sources in SVU said that Mrityunjay’s wife Aarti died during the divorce in 2013. case in a court.
Raids were conducted at Mrityunjay’s flat in Patna, his ancestral house in Araria and two houses of OSD and Ratna in Katihar. The SVU had registered an FIR against the duo on Thursday and obtained a search warrant from the court before conducting the raids.
Sources in SVU said that the raids at Ratna’s Katihar house included gold biscuits weighing around 600 grams, jewellery, documents of a flat on Power House Road in Jyoti Nagar worth Rs 33 lakh, as well as in Siliguri in West Bengal. A separate FIR has been registered in Katihar regarding the objectionable recovery.
The SVU also seized documents from Ratna’s house showing three life insurance policies worth several crores against whom a monthly premium of Rs 1.2 lakh was being paid. SVU officials also recovered bank passbooks from Ratna’s house, which contained around Rs 15 lakh in accounts.
SVU ADG Nayyar Hasnain Khan said the officer and his female friend were found together in a Patna flat from where deposits of over Rs 10 lakh in three bank accounts, Rs 3 lakh in cash and six cell phones were seized.
Ratna had thrown his iPhone out of the flat on the fifth floor during the raid. But it was recovered by the police personnel around the premises. The data from all the six cellphones was successfully extracted after unlocking by a technical team,” he said.
He said that Ratna is just a mask and Mrityunjay was using it to invest the money he earned wrongly. Khan said Ratna was dismissed from service on September 20, 2019, after she was arrested while taking a bribe.

Khan said there was an element of money laundering in the case as money was transferred from some accounts to the bank accounts of all three.
