Bihar is the first state to provide Rs 4 lakh each to next kin of Covid victims, says CM Nitish Kumar. Patna News – Times of India

Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said Bihar is the first state in India which began providing financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the next kin of the persons who died due to covid-19,
Addressing a public meeting as part of his ‘Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan’ (campaign for social reforms) at Srikrishna memorial stadium in Jamui, Nitish also said that he took several steps during the Covid-19 period to provide necessary assistance to migrant people and bring back them to their native places in Bihar.
He said the state government made sufficient arrangements for treatment of Covid-19 patients, resultantly, the infection has been almost controlled now. “I am delighted to inform you all that the effect of Covid-19 infection is going down very fast in Bihar. Now, Jamui district has only one Covid-19 infected patient. Lakhisarai district has only three patients, Sheikhpura (six) and Munger district only four infected persons. Now, I have complete faith that the Covid-19 infection would be ended,” Nitish said, adding, “Still, I continue to take stock of the Covid-19 situation in Bihar and outside the state every day.”
Jeevika Didis and other participants from four districts attended the public meeting.
The CM also pointed out that though Bihar is the third largest state of the country in the matter of population, it stood at 25th position in the case of Covid-19 infection. Bihar performed well in controlling the Covid-19 infection compared to many states, he said.
Nitish further appreciated a young couple – Babita Paswan and Rahul Kumar Manjhi – who had recently performed inter-caste marriage. The couple, present on the dais, were also paid a check of Rs one lakh as incentive for performing inter-caste marriage.
“The girl is from Paswan caste and the boy belongs to Manjhi caste. I am delighted to learn that the couple have performed inter-caste marriage. I invited them here to congratulate the duo. It is an ideal marriage. It is part of the ongoing social reforms campaign,” Nitish said amidst applause from the audience.
The CM further urged all participants of the public meeting, especially women and Didis of Jeevika, to make efforts to eradicate social evils like child marriage, dowry, and all types of addictions including liquor consumption.
The CM also reiterated that he would attend only those marriage functions where “No Dowry has been exchanged” is prominently mentioned on the wedding invitation cards.
The Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan was launched from Motihari on December 22 last year. As per its original schedule, the campaign was to culminate at Patna on January 15 this year. But it was suspended midway. The state government on January 5 decided to postpone the campaign in the wake of the rising case of omicron variant of Covid-19.
As the cases of Covid-19 reduced once again and all restrictions were lifted, the campaign was resumed from Bhagalpur on February 22. The Jamui meeting (February 23) was the second in the resumed schedule. The CM would now address similar public meetings in Begusarai on February 26, Bapu Sabhagar in Patna (February 27) and Purnia on March 3.
The social reforms campaign would now culminate after the last public meeting at Madhepura on March 6, an official of the cabinet secretariat department told TOI on Wednesday.
