Bihar Horror: Husband Thrashes 7-month Pregnant Woman For Dowry in Nalanda, She Dies

In a gruesome incident, a seven-month-old pregnant woman was thrashed by her husband over dowry. If reports are to be believed, the man kicked the woman in her stomach and then dumped her at her maternal home in an unconscious state. Family members of the woman took her immediately to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, she could not survive. Reports claimed that both the mother and her unborn child succumbed to the injuries during the treatment. The deceased has been identified as Saro Devi.

Bihar Dowry Death: What Had Happened?

Speaking to reporters, the victim’s father said that he married his daughter to Bunty Yadav, a native of Gonmapar village of Manpur police station area, on 12 December 2021. “A few months after their marriage, my son-in-law and his family demanded Rs 2 lakh from us to start a business. But we were not able to pay the money. Following this, she was physically assaulted by her husband.”

“Six days ago, things turned worse when the woman’s husband and her mother-in-law thrashed her brutally and kicked her in the stomach”, he added. Meanwhile, the woman’s body has been sent for postmortem examination and further investigations are underway.

The incident comes nearly a month after a pregnant woman was beaten to death by her in-laws over failing to fulfill their dowry demand, which included a refrigerator. The incident was reported from the Purnia district of Bihar. The woman was pregnant with her fifth child, according to reports.

Dowry Deaths In India

In India, dowry deaths are considered a serious problem, with 1.4 deaths per year per 100,000 women. After Uttar Pradesh, Bihar has a high rate of dowry deaths. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 535 dowry deaths reported in Bihar last to last year.
