Patna: A gang of six armed criminals looted Rs 6.82 lakh in cash from the Repura branch of State Bank of India (SBI) under Saraiya police station area. Muzaffarpur On Thursday, criminals also opened fire in the air to terrorize the locals who pelted stones at them in the district.
The incident happened around 11.20 am when bank officials were busy dealing with customers. Four youths armed with country-made pistols entered the bank, took the employees captive and recovered cash from the counter and the chest. They attacked cashier Akhilesh Kumar Paswan with the butt of a revolver.
Akhilesh told the police that the criminals overpowered two security guards- Upendra Kumar and Raju Paswan – And deposited the money from the cash counter. He then asked the manager of the bank branch to hand over the chest keys.
The robbers collected cash from the chest in plastic bags and fired in the air in the bank premises to terrorize the employees and customers. Two criminals with weapons in their hands were guarding the main road.
“When we pelted stones at the criminals, they opened fire in the air. They later fled with the looted money on their motorcycle,” said an eyewitness.
Bank branch manager Manish Anand told the police that the robbers also snatched cash from some customers. Security guards said they could not identify the robbers as they were wearing masks and had covered their faces with clothes.
Saraiya Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rajesh Sharma said that with the help of CCTV footage, efforts are being made to identify the robbers. He said that three empty cartridges were recovered from the spot.
