Bhupendra Yadav clarified on the statistics of child labor, said- a new portal was created to investigate complaints

Labor and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav clarified on Monday that data on children working in families is part of “dynamic” information, which is not usually available with various governments. The data on child labor is available on the website of the National Crime Investigation Bureau (NCIB), the minister said in Parliament today.

Yadav said that the National Child Labor Project (NCLP) has been transferred to the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. A pencil portal has been created on the website of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, which is probing over 3,000 complaints sent in the last two years. The Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan will focus on the issues related to the education of child laborers.

Congress MP from Tamil Nadu’s Virudhnagar Manickam Tagore raised the question of non-availability of data on child labor in Parliament today. “For child labour, if the government does not have the data, it is unfortunate.”

Tagore alleged that the government has not released funds to Tamil Nadu under the NCLP scheme since 2016. Under the flagship National Child Labor Project in Tamil Nadu, around 4,314 children rescued from labor are studying in schools in districts including Viruddhanagar, Dharmapuri. and Salem. He urged the central government to release the funds as the stipend given to those students is Rs 400 per month.

According to a recent study conducted by the Socio-Economic Development Foundation (SEDF), child labor among vulnerable communities in Tamil Nadu has increased by over 200% in the time of COVID.
