Bhawanipur bypoll: BJP optimistic about being a ‘strong force’ in Bengal even after Mamata’s big win

West Bengal BJP President Dr Sukant Majumdar on Sunday welcomed the people’s mandate Bhabnipur The by-election was announced on Sunday. Majumdar thanked the people of Bhawanipur for helping the party to get 22.29 percent of the total voter turnout of 57 percent.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee won the bypoll over her BJP rival Priyanka Tibrewal by a margin of 58,835 votes.

“First of all, I would like to congratulate Mamata Banerjee on her victory. She has won from Bhawanipur seat and it is our culture to accept people’s mandate. In the past also, we have accepted the mandate,” he said.

On the polling percentage, he said, “However, I would like to highlight that our candidate gave a tough fight to Mamata Banerjee. It has garnered more than 25,000 votes even though the overall polling percentage is close to 57 per cent. About 43 percent people did not come to vote and this is a huge figure. Despite this, our candidate gave a tough fight in Bhabnipur.

However, he said, “Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee thought that they would wipe out the BJP from Bhabnipur, but the way people extended their support is welcome. This will give us inspiration and boost our morale to take on the ruling party in Bengal. I personally believe that BJP will emerge as a strong force in the state in the coming days.

Former BJP president Dilip Ghosh also raised an optimistic voice and claimed that the election results show that the BJP still has a strong opposition in Bengal to counter the poor governance of the ruling party.

“The Trinamool Congress has deployed all its forces in Bhawanipore to stop us from campaigning and to prevent our voters from exercising their franchise. Despite this, the Election Commission remained silent. But after the election results, we felt a strong pro-BJP signal and hence, a large number of people voted for Priyanka Tibrewal. I think it is a good sign,” Ghosh said.

BJP MP Arjun Singh, who was in charge of Bhabnipur assembly by-poll, said, “Our supporters were threatened and terrorized in Bhabnipur. I believe that our candidate gave a tough fight despite such adverse conditions and we could have won the seat if it was a free and fair election.

“The more TMC tries to suppress us, the more we will emerge as a stronger force in the state.

Senior party leader and Bengal in-charge Amit Malviya tweeted, “This is a humiliating victory for Mamata Banerjee. Despite a domineering state, the specter of post-poll violence, fear and despair looming large, its polling percentage fell in 2011 (from 77.46 to 71.90 per cent). The defeat in Nandigram has tarnished his popularity.”
