Scientists are worried that these events could lead to another tragedy like the Kedarnath of 2013.

  • 79 villages of Pithoragarh, 40 villages of Chamoli and Bageshwar are also to be displaced.

Landslides are occurring in many areas due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert of rain in many areas including Dehradun, Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh and Tehri. Rivers are in spate. Due to this, there is panic among the local people of cloudburst. This year in the pre-monsoon itself, clouds have burst at four different places in Uttarakhand.

Scientists are worried that these events could lead to another tragedy like the Kedarnath of 2013. 308 vulnerable villages were to be displaced from the point of view of disaster. But so far this plan has not been completed. 79 in Pithoragarh district, more than 40 villages in Chamoli and Bageshwar are to be displaced.

The incidents of cloudburst increased rapidly in these villages.
Incidents of cloudburst have increased rapidly in these villages. According to Piyush Rautela, Director, Disaster Management Department, the first major cloudburst incident in Uttarakhand happened in 1952. Due to this the Nayaar river of Dudhatoli in Pauri district was flooded and the existence of Satpuli town came to an end. But now every monsoon season 15 to 20 incidents are happening. The Kedarnath tragedy was also caused by cloudburst, in which more than twenty thousand people died. Ten thousand are still missing.

5 major causes of cloudburst

1. The results of the research of the Meteorological Center Dehradun show that the rain is getting uniform in monsoon, but the rain which used to be in 7 days is happening in 3 days. The monsoon season from June to September is shrinking to July-August.

2. Dr. Sushil Kumar, chairman of the Department of Geo-Physics of Wadia Institute, says that in the past, clouds used to burst in Uttarakhand. But now multi cloud burst means that many clouds are bursting together at one place.

3. Incidents have increased due to the construction of Tehri Dam. The catchment area of Bhagirathi river was less earlier, it became more after the construction of the dam. The accumulation of so much water in one place accelerated the process of cloud formation.

4. Hydro power projects are going on in many places all over Uttarakhand. Due to this, the problems have increased by stopping the natural flow of the river. The situation has worsened in many places due to the rise in water level. According to experts, the incidents of cloudburst have also increased due to this reason.

5. Scientists consider the uneven distribution of forests to be the reason for excessive rainfall. Forest covers 70% of the area of Uttarakhand. Forests in the plains are disappearing. Monsoon winds do not get the atmosphere to rain in the plains, due to which the clouds burst.
