Security forces deployed at the polling center in a ward of Bhawanipur. Voting has started here from 7 pm.
Voting has started in three assembly seats including Bhavnipur in West Bengal. Along with Bhawanipur, polling is also being held in Jangipur and Shamsherganj seats of Murshidabad district. State Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamta Banerjee is herself in the fray from Bhawanipur seat.
The BJP has made High Court lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal its candidate from here. A total of 12 candidates are in the fray from Bhawanipur, out of which five are women. The Congress has not fielded any candidate from Bhawanipur seat while the CPM has fielded Srijeev Vishwas as its candidate.
Elections for the remaining four seats will be held on October 30.
Seven assembly seats in the state are vacant. But only three of these seats will go to polls on September 30. The remaining four seats will go to polls on October 30. Bhawanipur has been the traditional seat of Mamata Banerjee. She had won from here in the 2011 and 2016 assembly elections. But accepting the challenge of BJP, she had fielded from Nandigram in East Medinipur during the elections held in April-May this year.
BJP’s Shubhendu Adhikari had made a big difference by defeating Mamta by about 1956 votes from Nandigram. In the last assembly elections, TMC candidate Shobhandev Chatterjee was in the fray from Bhawanipur seat and he won here by a margin of about 29 thousand votes. But after Mamata’s defeat, Shobhandev resigned and vacated this seat for the chief minister. Shobhandev is also a minister in the Mamta cabinet.
