In Uttarakhand, work has started on the country’s first such project, in which a stream of glacier river will be diverted to Barsati river. On joining, it will happen for the first time that glacier water will flow in a rainy river.

The survey work of this megaproject to connect the river at the high altitude of the Himalayas has started. The great thing about the project is that for the first time a river of Garhwal division of Uttarakhand will be connected with the river of Kumaon division and water will be given to a large population. Also, large area will get water for irrigation.

Work being done under Jal Jeevan Mission
Work is being done on this project under Jal Jeevan Mission. Pindari Glacier is located in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. The Pindar River originates from it. 45 to 55 MLD water remains in this river. This capacity of water makes it a big river. Although Pindari Glacier falls in the Kumaon division, but as soon as it leaves Pindari Glacier, the Pindar River enters the Chamoli district of Garhwal Division. Where it covers a distance of 105 km and joins Alaknanda in Karnprayag. At the same time, Kosi river, which is a rainy river, flows in Baijnath valley of Bageshwar district of Kumaon division.

Water crisis will end in Nainital and Almora districts
The drinking water system in Nainital and Almora districts comes from the Kosi river. Pumps have been installed to supply water to both these districts. But from the last several years there was a shortage of water. These two districts will benefit from the arrival of Pindar water.

2200 meters will be connected to the upper catchment area by making a tunnel
In the project, two MLD water streams will be diverted to Kosi at an altitude of 1800 meters by making a direct tunnel from the 2200 meters upper catchment area of Pindar river. Prof MPS Bisht, director of USEC associated with the project, said that this will be the first such project in the country, in which glacier water will flow in a rainy river. The water of Pindar river is of little use till Karnprayag. Therefore, taking only two MLD of water from it, it will be given to a very large area.
