Surat: The factory in Panoli GIDC of Bharuch was manufacturing mephedrone (MD) since December 2021. This was revealed during investigation that took off after the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Mumbai police busted the drug manufacturing racket there last month. Police said that since the manufacturers sold the contraband only in Mumbai, local police did not get a whiff of the flourishing racket.
Drugs and raw material worth Rs 2,409 crore was seized within two days from Infinity Research and Development Limited in Panoli GIDC by two different police teams. Mumbai ANC had seized 513 kg MD while Bharuch police seized 1,300 litre of liquid and 82.5 kg MD in dry form. Police estimated, based on the seized quantity of contraband that a huge amount may have been already pumped into the market.
The name of the Panoli unit surfaced during the interrogation of six persons arrested after a raid at a similar unit in Nalasopara. Bharuch police arrested Chintan Pansuriya (33) and Jayant Tiwari (29) for allegedly running the unit Panoli unit. Police investigation revealed that Pansuriya was in-charge of operations while Tiwari was an employee there. During questioning of the duo and other accused arrested by Mumbai police, it was found that drugs were being manufactured in Panoli unit Since December 2021.
“Based on statements of the arrested accused and the investigation, it is clear that they were supplying drugs only to Mumbai,” said a senior police official.
