Hubli / Mysore: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai Appealed to farmers and leftist organizations not to support on Saturday Bharat Bandh on Monday because the pandemic will hamper the government’s efforts to recover the economy from the crisis as quickly as possible.
“Life is returning to normal in the state after being hit by the second wave of Covid-19. This is not the time to shut down when people are suffering from covid. This will only delay the economic recovery,” Bommai said.
NS Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of over 40 agricultural unions leading the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s three agricultural laws, has called for a nationwide strike on September 27, the day their protest will complete 10 months.
This is the second such shutdown by SKM against the implementation of the Farmer Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
Farmers organisations, trade unions affiliated to various Left parties and Dalit organizations are participating in the bandh. Only emergency services like ambulance and milk supply, medical services will be spared. Earlier in the day, some organizations in Mysore appealed for public support for the bandh call, while representatives of some business communities, including hoteliers, opposed it. “We are still struggling to come out of the impact of Covid. We had no business for more than seven months. This bandh call will affect us further. We are working closely with the farmers by buying vegetables, milk etc. We will not support this bandh.” Narayan GowdaPresident of Mysore District Hotel Owners Association.
“It will affect thousands of families. So, we are giving only outside support to the bandh,” said BS Prashant, president, Association of Mysore Organizations.
