Bhagwant Mann: From former comedian to next Chief Minister of Punjab, know the journey of Sangrur MP

Bhagwant Mann of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is going to become the next Chief Minister of Punjab. Mann is set for AAP’s first victory in Punjab and entry into the Indian political scene as a national party. AAP is leading in more than 80 seats out of total 117. Among all the AAP candidates, its CM face Mann is leading by the biggest margin. While it is all a celebration for Mann now, the comedian-turned-politician’s journey was not an easy one.

When Bhagwant Mann, an entertainer from Punjab, stepped onto national television, his comedy show was judged by Navjot Singh Sidhu of Congress, who has been one of his strong opponents in the 2022 assembly elections.

The biggest opponent of the prohibition value

There has been a wave in favor of AAP during the election campaign. Mann’s biggest opposition was his alleged prohibition.

Mann reportedly got drunk on several occasions. In 2015, a video of Bhagwant Mann allegedly attending a condolence meeting in Faridkot went viral. Another video of Mann’s Lok Sabha speech in 2019 went viral, in which he was purportedly drunk. The BJP had then demanded that the MP be drug tested.

Before getting the ticket from AAP, Mann had publicly announced that he was quitting alcohol. After this, Kejriwal, who was present on the stage, congratulated him on his decision. However, both the Congress and the BJP have repeatedly accused Bhagwant Mann of failing to keep his promise.

Ironically, on the victory, Punjab AAP in-charge Raghav Chadha, while addressing the AAP members, said that now the story of Punjab will change from ‘Udta Punjab’ to ‘Rangla Punjab’.

How was Mann chosen as your CM face?

Mann has been associated with AAP for a long time, however, he was selected from the Aam Aadmi (Aam Aadmi) as the CM candidate of AAP’s Punjab.

The Chief Minister of Delhi and the AAP supremo had said that Mann was elected after holding a vote among the general public. Votes were cast through phone calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages during the party’s special ‘Janata Chungi Apna CM’ candidate. Kejriwal declared that Mann had won as 93 per cent of the people voted in his favour.

early work

Mann worked in the Punjab entertainment industry for several years before entering politics, however, he is now trying to change his image of a comedian. In his affidavit to the Election Commission, Bhagwant Mann identifies himself as a politician by profession.

As in his work as a politician, Mann has been very vocal about Punjab in Parliament. He also gave a speech on agricultural laws supporting the then protesting farmers and demanded the abolition of agricultural laws. He has recently spoken about the poor education situation in Punjab and the brain drain in the state, when many students from the state were stuck in war-torn Ukraine.

His first film as an entertainer was Kacheri. It was released in 1994. Bhagwant Mann rose to national prominence after appearing in the stand-up comedy show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ of the late 2000s.

personal life

The 48-year-old MP from Sangrur is a college dropout. Always wearing a yellow turban, he is an ardent follower of Bhagat Singh.

His total declared assets are Rs 2 crore which includes Rs 48.1 lakh as movable assets and Rs 1.5 crore as immovable assets. His total declared income is Rs 18.3 lakh out of which Rs 18.3 lakh is his own income. The total liability of Bhagwant Mann is Rs 30.4 lakh.
