Bhagavad Gita will be in moral science curriculum in Karnataka schools, says education minister BC Nagesh

Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh has said that Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture, will be taught in schools across the state from the upcoming academic session. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Nagesh announced that the Gita would be introduced as part of the moral science curriculum in schools in Karnataka.

The Deccan Herald quoted Nagesh as saying, “Moral education is the need of the hour and therefore, stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata that help inculcating moral qualities will be included in the curriculum.”

Stating that former President APJ Abdul Kalam had talked about the positive impact of a religious textbook, Nagesh said there was nothing wrong with people of different religions listening to the Bhagavad Gita as it guides life. The minister said that the essence of the Gita to be taught in schools would soon be decided by the authorities.

Nagesh is arguing for the reason for teaching Gita in school because the Gujarat state government introduced it in its school curriculum for classes 6 to 8. The minister had said last month that the Bhagavad Gita was not only for Hindus but for all.

He said a final decision on introducing Geeta in schools would be taken only after consulting experts. The Karnataka education minister said whatever is recommended by experts, be it the Bhagavad Gita, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, or the teachings of the Bible and Quran, will be taught in the moral sciences in schools.

The demand to include Geeta in the school curriculum was also supported by Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, who recommended that every state in the country consider it. Recently, Joshi, the Lok Sabha MP from Dharwad, Karnataka, said that the Gita contains many moral stories that can inspire students as it teaches moral ethics and responsibility towards the well-being of the society. He said that all states should follow Gujarat and teach Bhagavad Gita in schools. The move to teach Gita in school was introduced by Gujarat as part of its effort to incorporate Indian culture and knowledge system in school education from the academic session 2022-23.
