The G20 summit will be held in Rome on Saturday and Sunday, and the COP26 high-level meeting, as the climate summit is called, will be held in Glasgow on Monday and Tuesday.
The meeting comes nearly five months after Iran walked away from two months of talks to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as the 2015 deal with the US became known. In recent days, after meeting in Brussels with EU negotiator Enrique Mora, Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said they would be keen to resume talks next month. Iran refused to meet with the E3 – France, Germany and the UK – as a group, only separately, and European states would not agree to it.
Bennett and other top Israeli officials have expressed concerns that Iran took advantage of the time since leaving the negotiating table in June to advance its nuclear program, such that a return to the JCPOA would be ineffective in disrupting it.
Other leaders Bennett plans to meet at COP26 include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Honduran President Juan. Orlando Hernandez, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stollenberg.
Hernandez visited Israel and met with Bennett earlier this year, when he opened Honduras’ embassy to Israel in Jerusalem.
