BENGALURU: The theft at SBI’s BTM Layout branch on Friday evening came to light in film style, with the miscreant holding a knife to the neck of an employee and asking his manager to open the strongroom, police said.
The suspects fled with Rs 3.8 lakh and gold worth over Rs 78 lakh. The Madiwala police have registered a case of robbery based on the complaint of Harish N, the manager in-charge of the branch and are trying to trace the miscreant.
He said the branch had no security personnel and the crime was committed by someone who knew the loopholes. According to the police, the incident took place at 5.40 pm, when Harish and his subordinate Tejaswini were about to close the main door of the bank.
Harish told the police that the branch manager was on leave since Thursday due to health reasons and he was the manager in-charge. He resumed work on Friday with clerk Tejaswini and attendant Chandramma, and Chandramma left the branch in the afternoon.
“Me and Tejaswini worked till 5.40 pm and reached the main door to close it. A crook – aged between 30 and 35 and wearing a facemask – came up to us and took out the knife. He hugged Tejaswini and demanded that I open the strongroom. Fearing for our lives, Tejaswini and I took her to the strongroom and gave her Rs 3,75,200 and 1,860 grams of gold in 17 packets. Then he ran away,” said Harish.
