TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee during his program in West Medinipur’s Keshpur village introduced three people from economically weaker sections and said they are now the “faces of TMC”.
Ahead of the panchayat polls in West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is making efforts to change the narrative, especially after federal agencies seized crores in cash allegedly linked to party leaders last year.
TMC has come up with a new strategy to counter the opposition, which alleges that even the lower level TMC workers live in big bungalows and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee introduced three people from economically weaker sections during his program at Keshpur village in West Medinipur on Saturday and said they are now the “faces of TMC”.
Abhijit Dalobera and his wife Manju Dalobera, member of Golar Panchayat and party supporter Hussain Uddin were called on the dais.
Banerjee also pointed out how she had refused to take money under the Banglar Awas Yojana (PM Awas Yojana) despite her name being in the list of beneficiaries.
To buttress his claim, the Member of Parliament from Diamond Harbor in West Bengal also showed pictures of the places where they stay in small mud thatched houses during the event.
“They are now the face of TMC, people who will bow their heads before the people, work for them and prefer this kind of lifestyle. He will be the face of TMC.
Though the election dates are yet to be announced, some strong local leaders of TMC have started staking claim for tickets. Some are even projecting themselves as the official candidates of the party.
TMC insiders say that this launch of Abhishek Banerjee clearly fails the “dadagiri” of these leaders in ticket distribution.
He said, ‘Be it the local president of the party or the block president, no one can give tickets. Only Mamata Banerjee Will give tickets and what the leaders are doing, everyone is watching. You will misbehave somewhere and think no one will know it is not possible. I am guarding the party and will see to it,” said the TMC leader.
In a way, the message was clear that the party would field candidates who would not be burdened by corruption and lead a simple life. On the other hand, party insiders say that the party will project that TMC is a party like Mamata Banerjee who lives in a small house despite being the chief minister. He said the allegation that the TMC leader lives a lavish lifestyle is a “nasty campaign” by the opposition.
TMC general secretary is continuously visiting West and East Medinipur districts. TMC insiders say that the influence of Shubhendu Adhikari, who represents the Nandigram seat in East Medinipur, has shrunk considerably following Banerjee’s focus on the region.
