Bengal by-polls: TMC won 4-0 as expected, analysts say, but a crushing defeat in Dinhata, BJP will suffer from Gosaba

With huge victory margins in Gosaba and Dinhata, West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress on Tuesday tightened its grip on the state as it won all the four assembly constituencies where bypolls were held on October 30. TMC now has 218 seats out of the total 294 seats.

Analysts say the results were largely expected as the TMC got the lead due to various reasons, including its thumping mandate in the April-May assembly elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party winning 3-0 in the by-elections. A bitter fight was witnessed with About 1 month ago. He believes the performance will further boost the party’s plan to take on the BJP at the national level.

Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee has instructed party workers not to hold any victory rallies.

Chief Minister and TMC president Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to congratulate the winners, while rival BJP also took a jibe.

Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien also mocked the saffron party on the microblogging site.

TMC got around 77% votes in four seats, while huge victory margins in Dinhata and Gosaba created a stir.

Dinhata

TMC’s Udayan Guha won from Dinhata seat by a margin of 1,64,089 votes. Interestingly, this seat in North Bengal has a strong presence of the Rajbanshi community and is the place from where the BJP started making inroads in the state. Dinhata is part of the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat which was won by the saffron party in the 2019 general elections. BJP got 1,14,981 or 50.37 per cent votes here while TMC got 99,442 or 43.57 per cent votes.

BJP’s Nisith Pramanik won the parliamentary seat and the party asked him to contest the assembly elections from Dinhata this year. He won again by a narrow margin of 57 votes, and later resigned to remain as an MP, necessitating a by-election. This time BJP has also lost its Minister of State for Home.

The TMC wants to regain control of North Bengal and political analysts say that this is the reason why the party all set to win the seat and inspired this huge victory margin.

“I knew the margin would cross one lakh because BJP has done nothing and will not do anything, it is clear,” Guha told News18.

The BJP, however, has claimed that the ruling party did not allow more people to vote this time.

Analysts say the crushing defeat in Dinhata will force the BJP to re-evaluate its position.

Out of 9 assembly seats in Cooch Behar, BJP won 7 and TMC 2 in April-May elections. Now BJP has 6 seats and Trinamool has 3 seats.

gosaba

As the counting of votes was about to begin in Gosaba, BJP candidate Palash Rana said that there was no free and fair polling and there was no point in expecting good results for his party. TMC’s Subrata Mandal won by 93,832 votes. Trinamool leader Jayant Naskar won the assembly election by 23,709 votes, with TMC getting 54% and BJP 42%. Naskar’s death prompted the by-election.

This area is considered to be the stronghold of Mamta Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek. During the election campaign, he had said, ‘I want Gosaba to give us the biggest margin of victory.

After his victory, Mandal said, “We have to work for the people… Abhishek Banerjee instructed that there should be no victory rally.”

However, the BJP here also alleged that many people were prevented from voting.

Khardah

It was originally the seat of Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra, who did not contest this time. In the April-May elections, TMC’s Kajal Sinha won by a margin of 28,000 votes. His death necessitated a by-election.

Trinamool leader Sovandeb Chatterjee was the party’s candidate here after she resigned from the Bhabnipur seat, which she won in the assembly elections, so Mamata Banerjee could contest the bypolls held there a month ago. The TMC chief needed to win the seat to retain her CM post as she lost the April-May election from Nandigram.

The victory margin for TMC from Khardah has crossed over 94,000 votes. Party’s veteran leader Saugata Roy said that it is Mamata wave at work.

Shantipur

In the assembly elections, BJP won the Shantipur seat by a margin of 15,000 votes. The winning candidate, Jagannath Sarkar, resigned to retain his MP seat and hence by-elections had to be arranged.

Shantipur was considered a BJP stronghold but Trinamool won here by a margin of 63,892 votes.

TMC was looking for a 4-0 win in the by-elections and has been successful. The defeat of Dinhata in particular has come as a setback for the BJP. Party leader Jai Prakash Majumdar said, “In by-elections, usually the mandate goes to the ruling party, and here they have not allowed people to vote.”

Analysts believe that keeping everything in mind, the BJP will have to refocus its focus on North Bengal.
