Over 1,200 cricketers from India and 18 countries across the world have registered for the 15th edition of the world’s most lucrative cricket tournament to be held in Bangalore on February 12 and 13.

With the addition of two new franchises Ahmedabad and Lucknow, ten teams will bid and participate in this year’s IPL.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday discussed the logistics and the evolving COVID situation with IPL franchise owners and announced that its showcase event will start in the last week of March and will run till the end of May.
With Covid cases rising in India, the BCCI is yet to confirm a timeline for the latest edition of the IPL.
“Most of the team owners expressed their desire that the tournament be held in India,” BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.
Shah said the BCCI “will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the IPL remains in India… and at the same time work on Plan B as the Covid-19 situation with the new variants remains fluid”.
The last edition of the IPL began in India but was suspended in May 2021 as cases escalated and was later completed in the United Arab Emirates with Chennai Super Kings emerging as champions.
India opener KL Rahul will captain Lucknow after being signed as the joint highest-paid player in the tournament’s history for Rs 170 million ($2.3 million).
Former Indian captain Virat Kohli was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in 2018 for the same amount.
Lucknow team owner Sanjeev Goenka told Star Sports, “I have been very impressed by KL’s not only batting and wicketkeeping abilities but also his leadership skills.”
Ahmedabad, which was bought by global private equity giant CVC Rajdhani, announced Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain of the new team.
The franchise signed Afghanistan star leg-spinner Rashid Khan for Rs 150 million ($2.1 million) and young Indian batsman Shubman Gill for Rs 80 million.
Former South Africa batsman and Ahmedabad franchise mentor Gary Kirsten said it was an opportunity for Hardik as a “young and new captain”.
“I think he’ll be really inspired to come and plan and show what he’s capable of at this level of the game as a leader,” Kirsten said.
