While Jennifer Lopez enjoys sharing her life with fans, Ben Affleck prefers privacy, causing tension in their relationship.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are facing marital challenges, but according to a source, these problems are not related to Lopez’s superstar status. “The idea that Ben thinks Jennifer is too famous and that he didn’t know what he was getting into with the attention on their marriage isn’t true,” a source told PEOPLE, adding, “There are deeper issues.”
As their two-year wedding anniversary passed this week, the couple spent time apart. Lopez was in the Hamptons with Affleck’s 18-year-old daughter Violet and friends, while Affleck stayed in Los Angeles. Recently, they’ve been living separately, only coming together for important family events, such as Violet’s graduation. On Mother’s Day in May, they were apart, but Lopez shared a brief tribute to Affleck on Father’s Day the following month.
Neither Affleck, 51, nor Lopez, 54, has publicly commented on their relationship issues. However, insiders close to the couple, who rekindled their early-2000s romance and eloped in Las Vegas in 2022, has provided some insight into the state of their marriage.
In mid-May, a source close to Lopez told PEOPLE that their relationship was “not in the best place at the moment.” Another source from the music industry noted that the couple has different approaches to handling the spotlight. Lopez enjoys sharing her life with the public, while Affleck is more private and introspective. This difference has caused tension in their relationship over time.
Affleck participated in Lopez’s documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which debuted earlier this year. In the documentary, Affleck admitted to initially resisting the idea of sharing their relationship on social media. “Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media,’ ” the Oscar winner said. “Then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like you’re gonna marry a boat captain and you go, ‘Well, I don’t like the water.’ ”
Despite their ongoing challenges, the couple continues to navigate their relationship, balancing their different personalities and public personas.
