This temple has been inaugurated on the completion of 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday inaugurated the historic Sri Ramana Kali Temple in Dhaka. 50 years ago this temple was destroyed by the Pakistan Army in the 1971 war. This temple has been rebuilt.

The President described the temple as a symbol of cultural and spiritual connection between the people of India and Bangladesh. President Kovind has come to Bangladesh at the invitation of Bangladeshi President M Abdul Hamid to mark 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence. His wife Savita Kovind was also present along with the President during the temple inauguration.

In 1971, the Pakistani army launched ‘Operation Searchlight’ to suppress the Bengali independence movement, during which the temple was set on fire and many people living in it were killed. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has described it as an emotional moment for both the countries. India has also helped in the reconstruction of the temple.

Kovind said – this is the blessing of mother Kali for me
After inaugurating the temple, Kovind said- Today I had the privilege of inaugurating the historic Ramana Kali temple. I see it as the blessings of Maa Kali. I am told that the governments and people of Bangladesh and India helped restore the temple.

The Indian President said- This temple is a symbol of the cultural and spiritual bond between the people of India and Bangladesh. This marks the auspicious end of my visit to Bangladesh.

Hindu population close to 10% in Bangladesh
President Ram Nath Kovind had arrived in Dhaka on a three-day state visit to attend the celebrations on the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen also called on President Kovind during the visit. Let us tell you that around 10% of the Hindu population lives in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
