Beast movie review: Thalapathy Vijay’s effortless swag is the saving grace in this inconsistent film

Animal

Director: Nelson Dilipkumar

Cast: Vijay, Pooja Hegde

Thalapathy Vijay brings a certain grace and swag to all his films, and Beast is no exception. The actor plays a RAW officer with a fondness for children, and promises a gentle and stylish action film with the first scene. However, as we progress through the film, we realize how inconsistent the writing is. It reaches a point where even Thalapathy fans can feel disappointed.

Vijay plays the role of Adhikari Veera, a man who single-handedly manages to nab a dreaded terrorist, even with nothing in his favor. But in the process, he loses someone who leaves a deep impression and he eventually quits his job and goes to a psychiatrist’s office. One thing leads to another, and our man finds a girlfriend (Pooja Hegde) and lands in a mall that is hijacked by terrorists. What happens is Vijay single-handedly re-killing all the terrorists, despite the calamities (read the idiots in his team).

Vijay is one of the talented actors not only in the Tamil industry but across the country. Needless to say, he plays Veera with swag and slays in style. His spontaneity is commendable. While this is a treat for all his fans, it also poses a problem where the protagonist cannot be challenged by just anyone. In comparison, all the terrorists look like children playing with guns. They are there just to pose with guns, and they seem to have no intention of killing. The antagonist needed to be strong to make Vijay look better!

What even his style and great action sequences can’t save is inconsistent writing. The film is so plagued with sluggish writing that things get repetitive and stretched out. The post interval seems very long, and even with perfectly sequenced action sequences, viewers can feel bored. Inside the theatre, the whistles and applause reduced considerably.

Nelson uses his signature humor and quirks to give his films an edge. Unlike his last two films, The Beast doesn’t have that much humour, but it does have splatters. Veera has that dark humour, albeit in bits, and interlocutor Altaf Hussain (Selvaraghavan) is full of it.

Pooja Hegde is there, just to be there and we wish there was more to her character than just being arm candy. Other appreciable aspects of the film are definitely Anirudh’s music and Paramhans’s camera work.

If you are a fan of Vijay, then Beast is definitely the movie for you as you would love to see the hero in this gentle avatar. If you’re not, you can still give the movie a chance if you’re willing to put the argument away for an hour and a half.
