Yes, the cause of your digestive problems could be these lifestyle habits that you are unknowingly making. Do you know that while following a healthy diet routine, it is equally important to keep in mind what you should not do after having a meal? Here we have come up with some expert advice, which reveals common and everyday errors that could be the reason behind your digestive disorders.

Ayurveda expert, Dr. Deeksha Bhavsar Sanwalia recently shared a post on her Instagram handle, which explains, “5 common mistakes in our daily routine that we should avoid to improve digestion without any medicine.”

Here’s what you should avoid doing in your routine:

  1. Bathing immediately after eating:
Dr. Diksa said that according to Ayurveda, every activity has a certain time duration and doing it beyond that limit can harm the human body. After having food, one should not take bath for the next 2 hours. “The fire element in the body is responsible for the digestion of food, so when you eat, the fire element gets activated and increases blood circulation for effective digestion and if you take a bath right after your meal, So the body temperature goes down and that results in slower digestion,” he said.
  2. Take a walk right after eating:
Walking long distances, swimming and exercising, all of these activities are very stimulating and can irritate the digestive tract leading to incomplete absorption of nutrition, flatulence and feeling of discomfort after meals. Dr. Diksa suggests that walking 100 steps after a meal, which is 1 minute to 10 minutes, is beneficial.
  3. Having lunch after 2 pm:
As per expert, Ayurveda recommends having lunch anytime between 12 noon to 2 pm, when the sun is at its peak in the sky. This is the time of the day when pitta is predominant, which helps in digesting your food easily. Ayurveda considers lunch as the most important meal of the day and recommends making it heavy. While eating after 2 pm, digestion gets disturbed and fat gets accumulated in the body.
  4. Eating curd at night:
Although consuming curd helps in digestion, consuming it during dinner or at night can lead to serious health problems. There can be problems of cold-cough and constipation. Curd is sour-sweet in taste and increases Kapha and Pitta dosha in the body. Kapha naturally predominates in the body at night and eating curd at this time can lead to excess Kapha. It can also accumulate in the intestine, which can make you feel constipated. Hence, Ayurveda recommends avoiding eating curd at night.
  5. Sleeping soon after eating:
Experts recommend keeping a gap of at least 3 hours between eating and sleeping. Failure to do so can lead to health issues like indigestion, heartburn, unhealthy weight gain and obesity. During a nap, the body repairs, heals, restores and digests food. For this reason, Ayurveda recommends that the last meal of the day should be relatively light and that sleeping right after a meal is avoided.
