The appointment of Basavaraj Bommai as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on Tuesday puts him in the ranks of an elite club, where a CM’s son becomes the Chief Minister himself.
Bommai is the son of former Karnataka CM SR Bommai, who served the office from 1996–98 – making him the second father-son duo in the state to join this elite club after JD(S)’s HD Deve Gowda and his son made. HD Kumaraswamy Deve Gowda served as the 14th CM of Karnataka from 1994-96, while Kumaraswamy served in the position from 2018-19.
There are many other prominent examples of this holy grail of Indian politics. In Uttar Pradesh, there are SP patrons Mulayam Singh Yadav and son Akhilesh Yadav. Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam served as the Chief Minister of UP for three consecutive terms, while Akhilesh held the CM’s chair from 2012 to 2017.
Similar is the case in Odisha where Biju Patnaik of the Biju Janata Dal became the third Chief Minister of the state, while his son Naveen Patnaik served as the 13th and current CM of the state.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YSR Jagan Mohan Reddy is another example, who also succeeded his Chief Minister father YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
In Tamil Nadu, DMK’s M Karunanidhi and MK Stalin are other prominent examples. Karunanidhi served as chief minister for nearly two decades in five terms from 1969-2011. His son MK Stalin followed in his father’s footsteps to become the eighth and current CM of Tamil Nadu.
Other examples of this interesting phenomenon in Indian politics are Congress leader Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, who served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, while his eldest son Vijay Bahuguna, a member of the BJP, was the sixth Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.
Shankarrao Chavan and Ashok Chavan are another father-son duo who became the CM of Maharashtra. Congress member Shankarrao served as the CM of Maharashtra twice, while his son held the position once from 2008-10.
