Basant Panchami is one of the important Hindu festivals, on which Goddess Saraswati is worshipped. This festival is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh month. It is also believed that spring season begins from this day.

Goddess Saraswati, who marks the beginning of spring, is respected and prayed to on Basant Panchami. People worship Goddess Saraswati so that she blesses them with enlightenment and knowledge and helps them to get rid of laziness and ignorance.

Basant Panchami 2023: Significance of Saraswati Puja

Mother Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, music and performing arts, is worshiped on Basant Panchami. While prayers and worship are performed, it is also a day when parents of children introduce them to the world of letters, hence literacy and knowledge. It is also known as Akshara Abhyasam or Vidyarambham (meaning beginning of education).

Saraswati Puja Rituals

Goddess Saraswati is worshiped with utmost devotion on this day. Many followers visit temples, play music and chant his name throughout the day. The puja requires mango wood and leaves, saffron, turmeric, akshat, kumkum, gangajal, kalash, naivedya, havan samidha, sandalwood, shodash matrika, saraswati yantra and durva dal. Wearing yellow color is considered auspicious on the day of Saraswati Puja.

According to Drik Panchang, “Though there is no specific Muhurta to perform Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami, but Puja should be performed only when Panchami Tithi prevails. Sometimes Panchami Tithi does not remain for the entire day of Vasant Panchami. That’s why we believe That it is important to perform Saraswati Puja within Panchami Tithi.”
