Barun Sobti on quitting romantic hero: It’s a deliberate attempt to do episodic projects

Barun Sobti, who has become a romantic hero on the small screen, is now making a conscious effort to shed that image. His early days included ‘Baat Hamari Pakki Hai’ and ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?’ Acted in shows like Without a doubt, these shows earned him the label of ‘TV Ke Superstar’, but Barun wants to be known as an actor and not a heartthrob. So, he has taken on more serious projects over the years. Her upcoming film, 200- Halla Ho, tells the story of how 200 Dalit women unitedly took law and justice into their own hands by thrashing a gangster, robber and serial rapist in an open court.

“The point is that a director and a writer can have a vision of their career and what exactly they like. But actors depend on what kind of choices they are given,” Barun said. Said, whose role as a corrupt cop Yusuf Qureshi in the previous film Halaal earned him appreciation from all quarters.

“You cannot write a role on yourself or direct a film and cast yourself. For an actor, it’s all about the choice of role you play. So more than what you do, what defines an actor’s career is what you say no to and it is a very deliberate effort that I have made to stay in the field that is a relevant one in my career. The element adds up and it doesn’t mean I’m looking down or anything. Some people like certain things and some people like other things so I think this kind of content is really relevant and I want to be a part of such a moment. I really want the day to come when audiences in India think, ‘If they like it, it must be something relevant.'”

Written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta, produced by Yoodlee Films, 200 – Halla Ho will premiere on August 20 on ZEE5. The film marks the return of famous actor Amol Palekar to films after almost a decade.

Talking about his role in the film, Barun said, “I am playing the role of Umesh Shukla in the film. He is a lawyer who takes up cases free of charge. When I was first narrated the script of this film, I was extremely eager to be a part of it, no matter what role I have to play. I am very happy that I got to play what I got to play. Just as the (Dalit) community needs our support, I think Indian cinema also needs a lot of support and that was the main reason I wanted to be a part of this film. And, if anyone is reading this now, there is anything relevant and I always want to be in support of that, so that’s the main reason I wanted to do this film.”

200 – Halla Ho, includes Amol Palekar, Barun, Rinku Rajguru, Sahil Khattar, Saloni Batra, Indranil Sengupta and Upendra Limaye.
