Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, has taken over the world. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, was released on July 21 despite controversy and a box office clash with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Compared to Oppenheimer, Barbie the Movie was not expected to do well at the box office in India.

As per initial estimates, Barbie has touched Rs 5 crore mark on its first day in India. The Greta Gerwig film is expected to gross over $300 million worldwide in its first weekend. With a box office collection of Rs 5 crore, Barbie left Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. However, Barbie still lags behind Oppenheimer. The film is expected to cross the Rs 17 crore mark at the box office in India.

While Barbie leads Oppenheimer at the US box office, it lags behind in India as Nolan’s film topped ticket sales on Friday.

Prior to its release, Barbie got into soup for a number of reasons. The makers were criticized for an overly woke story about children’s dolls. In addition, the casting of Ryan Gosling as Kane was also in question. Following the trailer’s release, Barbie was banned in several countries, including Vietnam, after the world map in Barbie Land looked childish.

Released on July 21, Barbie also stars America Ferrera, Hari Neff, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu and Issa Rae.
