Bank Holidays in December: Private and public sector banks in the country will remain closed for at least six days in the last 10 days in December. After two consecutive months of festivities, the number of bank holidays has come down significantly this month. In this month, there is only one national holiday – Christmas – when banks will be closed uniformly across the country. Every year the holidays are notified as per the list prepared by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). There are seven state-wise holidays in the December list this year, some of which have expired.
Christmas is one of the seven bank holidays state-wise this month. However, Christmas falls on the second Saturday of the month, which is already a notified holiday for banks. Therefore, adding the seven holidays and six weekend holidays, the total number of bank holidays in December comes to 12, with Christmas holidays overlapping. Of these 12 holidays, only six have expired in the first 20 days of December, and during the last 10 days, six of the banks will be closed in the states.
It is being said that if you want to do some work related to the bank, then you should take care of these bank holidays in December to do the work smoothly. However, in this regard, you should also note that this should not be of much concern as these holidays are state wise. For this, only a few branches of banks in the respective states will remain closed during the above days. For example, December 24 is a bank holiday in Aizawl and Shillong on Christmas Eve. However, banks will remain open in other parts of the country on that day.
Bank holidays are effective as per the list issued by Reserve Bank of India or RBI. According to a list of the central bank, the number of holidays this month has been fixed at seven. The rest are weekend leaves. This includes all Sundays of the month as well as the second and fourth Saturdays. Banks are open on the first and third Saturdays of every month. The RBI holidays list falls into three categories. These are state wise celebrations, religious holidays and festival celebrations.
The Reserve Bank of India’s notification for holidays has been notified under three brackets namely ‘Holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act’, ‘Holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays’ and ‘Closing Accounts of Banks’. Are included. All branches of banks including public sector, private sector, foreign banks, co-operative banks and regional banks will remain closed on these notified holidays.
