Bangladesh announced for ICC T20 World Cup, not Tamim Iqbal

Bangladesh Cricket The Board (BCB) on Thursday announced a 15-man squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup to be held in Oman and the UAE. The announcement came a day after Bangladesh secured their maiden T20I series win against New Zealand with a six-wicket win in the fourth T20I at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh recently won the T20 series against Zimbabwe 2-1 and Australia 4-1.

The team did not come as a big surprise and this includes their main players except opener Tamim Iqbal. Iqbal, who had decided to pull out of the tournament, ruled through a video on Facebook that he did not want to be replaced by youngsters who played in the format more consistently than him. Iqbal was the highest run-scorer in the 2016 T20 World Cup in India with 295 runs at an average of 73.75.

Fast bowler Rubel Hossain and leg-spin all-rounder Aminul Islam Biplab have been named as reserve players. Nurul Hasan is likely to take over the wicketkeeping responsibility as senior keeper Mushfiqur Rahim expressed his desire to no longer keep wickets in the format. The team comprises eight batsmen, two all-rounders, four frontline pacers and one specialist spinner.

Bangladesh are placed in Group B along with Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland. If they finish in the top two of their group, they will have a chance to qualify for the Super 12 stage. They will take on Scotland in their first match on October 17 at the Oman Academy Cricket Ground in Muscat, which also happens to be the opening day of the T20 World Cup.
