In the last few days, many incidents of technical failure in airplanes have come to the fore.

Earlier today, aviation regulator DGCA issued a show cause notice to SpiceJet following eight technical snag incidents in the airline’s aircraft in the last 18 days.

The notice issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) states that SpiceJet has failed to “establish safe, efficient and reliable air services” under the terms of Rule 134 and Schedule XI of the Aircraft Rules, 1937.

“The review (incidents) shows that poor internal safety inspections and inadequate maintenance actions (as most incidents were related to either component failure or system-related failure) have resulted in a decline in safety margins.”

The DGCA has given the airline three weeks to respond to the notice.

“The financial appraisal done by DGCA in September 2021 also revealed that the airline is operating on ‘cash-and-carry’ (model) and payments are not being made to the suppliers/approved vendors on regular basis, leading to Shortage of spares is happening more frequently. Invoking MEL (Minimum Equipment Inventory),” the notice read.

Responding to the DGCA notice, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the safety of passengers is of paramount importance.

“Even the smallest mistake that hinders security will be thoroughly investigated and corrected,” the minister said in a tweet.

In the last 18 days, there have been at least eight incidents of technical glitches in SpiceJet planes.
