BAN vs PAK, 1st Test: Abid Ali, Abdullah Shafiq take Pakistan to 145/0 against Bangladesh on Day 2

Unbeaten fifties from openers Abid Ali (93 not out) and Abdullah Shafiq (52 not out) took Pakistan to 145/0 by 185 runs at the end of the second day of the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh. on Saturday.

After a less successful outing on the first day, the bowlers bowled out Bangladesh for 330 in the morning session for Pakistan on the second day, with Hasan Ali taking his sixth five-wicket haul in Tests.

Resuming the day at 253/4, Bangladesh didn’t have a great start as Liton Das, who scored a scintillating Test century on day one, was dismissed by Hasan Ali in the second over.

Liton’s wicket broke the huge fifth-wicket stand of 206 between him and Mushfiqur. Pakistan did not have to wait long for the next wicket as Hasan removed Yasir Ali a few overs later. Though Mushfiqur tried hard to catch up, the runs had dried up with the Pakistan bowlers keeping up the pressure with their tight lines and length.

Faheem Ashraf finally removed Mushfiqur just before the drinks break as the Bangladesh legend missed his century by nine runs. Mehdi Hasan tried to accelerate with some lofty shots but found little support from the other end.

Taijul Islam (11) was removed by Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali soon wrapped up the innings, dismissing Abu Zayed (8) and Abadot Hossain (0) on back-to-back deliveries just before lunch. Hasan finished with impressive figures of 5/51, with Mehdi remaining unbeaten on 38 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 330.

In reply, Bangladesh bowlers failed to make an impact as Pakistan openers Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafiq showed their class. As the host bowlers failed to apply pressure, Abid scored his third Test half-century as Pakistan went unheeded on 79/0.

After tea, both of them continued from where they had left and kept the scoreboard. Abid punched it from the off side for a couple, soon after the 100-run partnership. He was the aggressive of the two, spending his time, bouncing on loose deliveries, and occasionally breaking boundaries to keep the pressure up.

The Bangladesh bowlers failed to create any definite chances and looked completely exhausted by the end, while Shafiq completed his maiden Test fifty by hitting a six over the bowler’s head to the standing ovation of his teammates in the dressing room.

The game was eventually called off early due to bad light as Pakistan made a happy return for both the teams.
